Hawken School is an independent grade school with two campuses – a lower & middle school campus and an upper school campus - in the greater-Cleveland area. While each campus was founded around historically and architecturally significant structures, indiscriminate growth left the campuses without a coherent visual identity. We prepared a 10-year master plan for each campus to address immediate- and long-term needs, and to establish a sense of place for each campus, reinforcing a sense of community. On each campus, our plans outline the creation of academic villages, building on the strengths of the original historic structures.
Concurrent with the planning efforts, we completed the design for a new natatorium and renovation of their existing athletic complex on the Gates Mills, OH campus. The Hawken Natatorium serves as home to a new 8-lane, 25-yard competitive pool and new lobby, which is shared by the adjoining, renovated field house. The new pool building and entry create a consolidated athletic complex in a style which the school intends to be the unifying new, yet historic, aesthetic of the Gates Mill Campus. As such, this first project starts the process of both visually and spatially organizing the Gates Mills campus.
